Lights back on at the Akumal library! Yippeeee!!!

12/21/03

The lights are back on in the Akumal library! And the computers! And the air conditioning! Yippeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! Yes,Virginia, there IS a Santa Claus. Well, ok, all of the wonderful supporters of Hekab Be Biblioteca are the real Santa Clauses. (Santa Clausi? Santa Clausum? HoHoHoers?)

Heartfelt thanks to all of the library helpers who dug a little deeper into their pockets to help this one-room inspirational library and literacy center during its most difficult crisis. The amazing thing is that during the last few months when the library had no electricity – the kids still came! Slightly dark and more than slightly hot in there, but the kids still came to read and check out books and “earn” little prizes and school supplies. With the electricity back, library helpers installed the new video card in the computer and it works!!!

The library’s hours have been a bit more irregular with the lack of electricity – so sorry to some of you who visited and found it closed. Now that the electricity is back on, all should be back to the usual times and more regular schedule.

If you are reading this and will be in Akumal on 12/23 at 10:30 a.m, come join the fun and chaos at the annual holiday party. There will be pinatas, games, balloons, and a little gift for every child. Refreshments are “pot luck” so if you stop by, bring a little something. Rumor has it that some wonderful Santa’s helper is bringing lots of silly putty for the kiddos – won’t that be fun!

If you want to help and are visiting soon, you can donate cash or a check made out to “Hekab Be Biblioteca” – along with any basic school supplies, art supplies, and little toys used as reading incentives.

If you want to help, but are not visiting the area soon, you can mail me a check in U.S. dollars made out to “Hekab Be Biblioteca.” I will bundle the checks and make sure they are delivered safely. Send your check to:

Chuck and I will be in Akumal 12/23 – 12/31. We just miss the party. : (
But, I’m sure we will have a great time in our favorite place, and we’ll bring back a little news and a few smiles from the library.

Have a joyous holiday everyone.

were all the stuffed animals we took down last year. Including a Godzilla that growled! We wish the kids all the best for Christmas, and for the rest of their lives, too!

Alice,my husband and I were in Akumal the first week in December. We stopped off at the library to make a donation and leave some treats for the children. The library was closed so our driver took us to meet Carlos at his home. What a nice young man. We will continue to assist when possible but I do not understand why the government does not help with funding. Where is the school? How many children live in Akumal? It seems like the population is very low at least among the non-tourists.I just love this little library. Thanks for all the updates!
