I'd about given up on this little day trip since it's a long way from Kantenah where I'll be, but then I got to thinking I better find out from ya'll how to do it.
What time in the AM should I start out if I plan to take a cheap bus to Cancun? What time do I need to leave Isla to make SURE I can get a cheap bus back from Cancun to my resort? I still haven't ascertained exactly what time those buses stop running.
I hesitate to give you any advice on this one, as I can see a lot of potential for complications...
The busses basically run 'round the clock, but you're really going to want to travel under daylight - in both directions.
To keep things simpler, you might want to catch a ferry from Playa Linda, in Cancun, rather than travel up to Punta Sam or Puerto Juarez. Maybe greg or John or someone who's made that trip lately can help you out on the ferry schedule from the Hotel Zone.
Regardless of which port you use, you will have to catch a bus or taxi to the Bus Terminal, downtown Cancun, in order to connect with the "cheap bus" to or from Kantenah.
It's probably 1 - 1 1/2 hour's driving time from Kantenah to downtown Cancun in a car. A bus will take much longer, depending on the number of stops. Add in another 1/2 - 1 hour to get to the ferry dock and you've already burned up to 5 hours out of your day. Can't remember how long the ferry ride takes, but it's not looking like you'd have a lot of time on the island.
I like Isla, but Cozumel is a much easier destination to reach from Kantenah...
Good luck,
Dave
If you're going to end up in downtown Cancun anyway on the bus, it's cheaper and easier to just get a taxi to Puerto Juarez than to try and find one of the hotel zone ferries. (if you aren't familiar with Cancun).
If you really want to do this trip from Kantenah, I would suggest spending the night on Isla so that you don't feel rushed.
Cat
agree with Cat about spending the night on Isla. i don't know how far the Fiesta is from 307, but you have to walk to the highway to get the bus and then back from the highway to the hotel after getting off the bus. wouldn't want you to do that in the dark. easiest thing is to take a car to Punta Sam and take the car ferry over. again, you don't want to be on 307 at night even in a car. way Dark and with nutsy driver's besides. tim
I was thinking about pulling into port after dark. The Hotel Zone would be a more hospitable (and populated) place. Also, catching a bus on the way back from Puerto Juarez or Punta Sam might be a bit tricky.
Dave
I agree about Punta Sam, but Puerto Juarez is a piece of cake. Don't know when you were there last, but I've done it a million times. It's really civilized now, LOL. The bus to downtown and the hotel zone is directly across the street from the port, and shows up about 10 minutes after the ferry gets in. In the meantime, the taxi drivers all hustle you for rides. (Which, if I were not familiar with Cancun, I would just take one of the taxis to the bus station) It really is as safe a place as any, as long as you don't go walking off half a mile down the street.

That's good to know, Cat. We last went to Isla in September of '99, but took a rental car to the port. I didn't notice the bus service.
