First let me say, we had a wonderful time at the Aventura Palace. I would rate it very high in service, fun, and dollar value to the vacationer. We had a wonderful time, ate and drank some of everything, and neither of us felt bad or got sick. The water and ice is ok. A little Spanish goes a long way in this part of Mexico. We will return to the Aventura. Enjoy and have a wonderful vacation.
We selected the Aventura because it was an adults only resort, (meaning no kids). We have three (3) wonderful kids, we love and enjoy kids very much. Ours are all away from home and doing great, so we don't want to vacation with your kids no mater how well you raised them. Thus we go to resorts that are adult only.
We had made our reservations in Feb, almost 5 months before we departed. We had hoped that early reservations would ensure a room with a great view. After hearing 2 months of negative reports about rooms and construction noise. We had our travel agent contact the Palace resorts to ensure we had a room away from the construction side. She told us that she made a phone call and sent a fax to the main office of the Palace Resorts in April. I then found the phone & fax number of the Aventura and sent a fax in my best Spanish and English to the manager asking for a pool view away from the construction.
Flew out of Houston, Texas on a FunJet vacation package that included the hotel and the air fare and all taxes, tips, transportation to and from the resort and airport fees.
Cancun Airport - detailed because I did not understand the process from other web pages.
We elected to depart early morning to give us almost a full day at the resort. We arrived at the Cancun, Mexico airport about 8 AM. Exiting the aircraft gangway, we proceeded down a outdoor 2nd story pathway to a set of stairs that led to a large covered area where we waited in line to go through the Immigration check in process. There were 345 on our flight and five (5) lines, with only 2 open when we arrived, with a third coming in after 10 minutes. Even with this all passengers were through immigration before all of the luggage got off the aircraft. Check in through immigration is slowed down somewhat because the officials enter the name of all persons entering Mexico into their computer. If you have only a birth certificate they have to do this manually, if you have a passport they scan it and it is entered automatically. We had passports, but if we did not plan to travel often we would have used birth certificates. In this area were free books on Cancun and some of the areas of interest, I got two of each because I make a photo album of our trip when I get home. I use photos take by me and pictures and maps from the books to supplement what we have seen. Once out of the airport I never saw any of these books again, I'm sure they were in the Cancun area, but I saw none in the Playa area. People later ask were I got the maps and info about the area, I said the airport, it was free.
The Famous Red/Green Stop light
We were in the front of the plane and thru immigration quickly, but were one of the last to get our bags. It's vacation and Mexico, no hurry.. After we had our bags with immigration stamp we went to the customs area where the famous Red/Green Stop light is. I had no clue how this worked from reading all the hot line and web pages about the airport, but I will try to describe it in detail to maybe help others. With your luggage you move to another line, there were 2 open when we arrived. You pick the line you want to be in, move to the front hand the customs official your family entry information card, and are ask to press the button below the Green and Red Stop light type of signal. After pressing the button you get Green you proceed through, if you get Red then your bags are checked. I was behind 5 or 7 families and we all got a Green light, the same for the other line. It's a random way of checking incoming people, I have no idea how often it turns Red, but I saw no one hit red.
